A New Oyster Reef!
Coastal Virginia Conservancy (CVC) worked with Seaward Marine to construct a 2.1-acre shoreline oyster reef with over 2,400 tons of stone at Lambert’s Point complimenting two other restoration projects along the same shoreline. Norfolk & Southern installed stone breakwaters and a living shoreline along 1,300 linear feet along its Lambert’s Point property to combat active erosion at the site. Virginia Marine Resources Commission completed an oyster reef along that same edge this spring. The new reef left a small portion of shoreline unprotected giving CVC the opportunity to finish the edge with the completion of their reef. The site is already showing considerable oyster settlement, and CVC expects these combined efforts will significantly decrease erosion at the site and exponentially improve habitat value.

SIP, SAVOR, & SAVE THE COAST AT
Back Bay Farmhouse Brewing Co.
Back in April, we kicked off spring with a cozy night at Back Bay Farmhouse Brewing Co. — complete with craft brews, tasty bites, and great conversations around the firepit. We loved catching up with friends, sharing updates on our projects, and were even surprised with live music from the Virginia Arts Festival!

SIP, SAVOR, & SAVE THE COAST AT
CoVA Brewing Co.
In June, we headed to Norfolk for another round of Sip, Savor & Save the Coast, this time at COVA Brewing Co. It was such a fun evening of raising a glass with our community, swapping stories, and talking about how we can all work together to protect the coast we call home.

Both evenings reminded us why we do what we do — bringing people together, raising a glass, and building a community that’s passionate about protecting Coastal Virginia’s lands and waters.

~ Beautifully forested parcel bounded by critical wetlands is preserved forever ~
Coastal Virginia Conservancy has conserved a 25-acre parcel nestled in the heart of Virginia Beach. This beautifully forested property hosts uninterrupted views of natural wilderness. Critical wetlands along West Neck Creek help to form this parcel’s boundary, providing important habitat for birds and other species needing a quiet home away from the bustle of Virginia Beach.
Its owners protected it throughout their lifetime, a remaining piece of their family’s farm. As they have grown older, they sought an innovative land management approach that would forever preserve this pristine property but also allow them to pass the land to new owners. A partnership formed between Coastal Virginia Conservancy, the landowners, and the adjacent neighborhood brought together all the pieces needed to keep this unique property in its natural state forever.
Coastal Virginia Conservancy used a land preservation tool called a conservation easement. The new owners will continue the legacy of protection with the guidance of Coastal Virginia Conservancy. The former landowners can rest assured that this land, so important to their family, will continue to stay wild and be stewarded for future generations.
